As always the "World Magic Seminar" proved to be amusing and somewhat entertaining. I haven't attended the seminar for a few years, and absolutely nothing has changed. As usual it was held at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas and the schedule seemed to be the same as in previous years.
I did enjoy being with my dear friends Bill and Gigi Smith of Magic Ventures. Bill's company creates some of the best illusions in the world, of which I own several. Another treat was seeing Mr. Billy McComb and having a nice chat with him about what I've been doing. (Look for an upcoming interview about Billy under Celebrity interviews.) Also, on the last day of the convention, my good friend and fellow magic enthusiast, Mr. Robin Leach accompanied me and purchased a few items from the dealer room.
In the dealer room there were lots of interesting items. There is one company I liked very much and that was "Woodmagic" from Dallas, Texas. The fruit candy necklace is a wonderful item to have around while entertaining guest. There is also the version which uses four different types of wood.
The shows at the convention were actually impressive, with the exception of the competition. On Monday the show featured Hans Davis of Belgium. His shadowgraphy act was a bit slow in the beginning and near the end redeemed itself. He has a unique talent and obviously geat dexterity in his fingers. Hopefully he will never have arthrictic problems. My favorite was "David and Dania", who performed their quick change act. They were an incredibly smooth pair and I enjoyed them the most. Then there was the juggling act. I am not a big fan of jugglers, but they were pretty funny. And last but not least, Rick Thomas performed a half hour of illusions from his daily show at the Trop. Rick has great stage presence, but obviously needs to work out. His breathing seemed so intense, since he wasn't really moving around that much. Maybe he's a smoker!
My final ideas about this years seminar are about the competition. I have yet to see the seminar have a female magician compete. This year it was the same all male performers with a few female assistants. I do not understand why Joe Stevens can't or will not put a female competitor there. It is discrimination and this is a new century. You would think that by now this would not be a problem. And from the looks of those competing I do believe there are many females who could give them a good run for their money. It is so disappointing that the Magic profession hasn't kept up with the times. Hopefully one day!
Overall, I did enjoy myself and suggest that if any of you magic enthusiast or performers plan to attend next year, it is advisable. Next years seminar will move to the Rio Hotel and will be held January 14-17, 2001.
Magic Wishes, Melanie
